DESSERT? WE ONLY NEED ONE
Call us cocky, but when it comes to the dessert list… well we don’t have a list.
There’s only one dessert on our menu, and we’re pretty smug about it, actually.
KINAKO FRENCH TOAST
Kinako is a roasted soybean flour – commonly used in Japanese cuisine. Kinako means “yellow flour” in Japanese.
Our toast is made of thick-cut brioche – proper French – and served in a triangular slab. Fluffy inside, crisp crust and that earthy kinako topping.
Our crew lovingly add matcha soft serve to the plate before it hits the table. Big enough to share between two, but we won’t judge you for ordering one to yourself…
WHAT DOES EVERYONE ELSE RECKON?
Over the last eight years we’ve had journo’s, foodies, tourists and even comedians drop by, to see if it lives up to the hype.
As far back as 2015, the Guardian called our toast “a humble dessert that quite unexpectedly became a legend” – and legend Grace Dent said:
“I’m calling the Kinako French toast the greatest new pudding in London for 2015. A hunk of buttery, syrupy, sticky-middle, crispy-edged, hot-from-the-pan sweet stodge, served with green tea-flavoured Mr Whippy ice cream. Yes, yes, yes!”
In 2019, Jun & Tonic said: ‘This french toast is of a different breed entirely. It’s a little kooky, a little unconventional, but done with so much gumption and glorious flavour that it’s the only french toast I’ve ever truly craved.’
‘The Kinako French Toast at Shackfuyu is my favourite dessert in London,’ wrote food blogger Mehreen Amira in 2021.
Last year, Thatsup included Shackfuyu in its guide to the best spots in Soho, and we even got a shoutout in the Independent – when another restaurant who braved just one dessert on the menu slightly missed the mark.
BORDERING ON BRAGGING
I’m sure we’ve made our point – our Kinako has built a bit of a cult following, and we’re proud to serve it all these years later, and still get such great feedback.
Will it be love at first taste for you?
We’d love you to pull up a bar stool and find out.
